IVF & Fertility Treatment Timeline
A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Families
Understanding the process helps you feel confident and prepared. Here’s what to expect from your first visit to the pregnancy test.
Step 1: First Visit
- Meet with your fertility specialist
- Share your medical and menstrual history
- Physical examination and initial planning
Step 2: Investigations
A few key tests help identify the cause and guide treatment:
- Semen Analysis – checks sperm count, movement, and shape
- Hormone Blood Tests – assess ovulation and reproductive health
- Tubal Patency Test (HSG or Saline Sono) – checks if fallopian tubes are open
- Pelvic Ultrasound – views ovaries and uterus for any abnormalities
Step 3: Treatment Planning
Based on test results, your doctor will recommend:
- Lifestyle changes – balanced diet, sleep, stress reduction
- Medications or IUI – for mild or moderate cases
- IVF or ICSI – if needed, based on age, results, or prior treatment response
Step 4: IVF Cycle
If IVF is recommended, here’s what the cycle looks like:
- Ovarian Stimulation – daily hormone injections for 8–12 days
- Egg Retrieval (OPU) – a short procedure under light sedation
- Fertilization or ICSI – sperm and eggs combined in the lab
- Embryo Growth – embryos are observed for 3–5 days
- Embryo Transfer (ET) – one or more embryos are placed in the uterus
Step 5: Follow-Up
- Continue medications to support implantation
- Pregnancy test is done 10–14 days after embryo transfer
- Next steps discussed based on results
Note: Every patient’s journey is unique. Your doctor will guide you at each step and adjust the plan as needed.
